Sempervivum Succulentus

Sempervivum are succulent perennials forming mats composed of tufted leaves in rosettes. In favourable conditions they spread rapidly via offsets, and several species are valued in cultivation as ground cover for dry, sunny locations.

• Emperor Charlemagne of the Holy Roman Empire loved them so much that he mandated houseleeks be planted on the thatched roofs of all his empire's buildings to help prevent fires.
•  Their coluorful, waxy leaf colours are highly dynamic. Their hues intensify dramatically when they are stressed by cold temperatures or bright sun.
